PAS 2050

This Publicly Available Specification (PAS) for measuring the embodied greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from goods and services is managed by the British Standards Institute.

The PAS aims to bridge the gap between the existing detailed and more general approaches and provide a standardised, consistent method organisations can practically use for measuring the GHG emissions embodied in products and services.

Company's need to be ready to implement PAS 2050.  For example they need to know:
  • who is under pressure to become more competitive in a low carbon economy

  • their ability to respond to this pressure

  • the relevance of the actions they may have already taken to reduce cost, energy & carbon usage or manage resources more efficiently.

In 2009, the Department of Business Innovation and Skills wished to measure the above in support of its UK Low Carbon Industrial Strategy. They used the CarbonTop3Map as the readiness measurement tool. The relationship between PAS 205O and the Carbon Top3Map is illustrated below

As shown above the Carbon Top3Map simply looks to understand the issues that are inside a company's control.  These issues are illustrated below.  The relationship between the issues and the questions in the Carbon Top3Map tool are shown below.

Carbon Top3Map users are provided with feedback on how their response compares to the UK national average via a benchmark. Users value this approach and seek assistance as a consequence to improve their carbon reduction readiness.  Examples of how users have used it to benchmark their supply chains is shown here.
